Growing Australian Native Plants

Compiled by Craig Dewick

This page is mostly a focused portal which provides a list of links that contain info very useful if you are interested in cultivating and/or growing any types of Australian native plants. I have a passion for growing native plants in and around my property and try to incorporate them whenever possible (I live between two national parks!).

The information links in this section are provided by the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the Centre for Plant Bio-diversity Research, which are both located in Canberra (the main city in the ACT).

ANBG Propagation and Cultivation Guides

Before you get started, you should read up on some basic tips on propagating Australian plants.

Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens - Key Features!

The The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens website has excellent material on Australian native plants endemic to the state of New South Wales, Australia.

A couple of outstanding features of the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens website are:

The Association of Societies for Growing Australian Native Plants

Visit ASGAP Another rich source of information about Australian native plants is the Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants (aka ASGAP).

If you are interested in the cultivation, propagation, conservation and appreciation of Australia's native flora, you will find volumes of information which can be used independently, alongside the material from the ANBG, or in combination with any other resources you have available.

Places and Sites of Interest

There are many places and websites around Australia which are dedicated to the study, cultivation and general promotion of Australian native flora. Please research and visit places in your local area to learn about the native plant resources available to you.

Places and Sites in the Illawarra Region of NSW

There are quite a few good websites and places in the Illawarra region of NSW (my local area) which cater for the interests of Australian native plant enthusiasts...

Places and Sites in Other Parts of Australia

There are many other web sites and places catering especially for native plant enthusiasts and researchers all over Australia. These are just a few that I recommend...

The Australian Plants Society is based at Blacktown here in Sydney and is a non-profit, independent, incorporated community organisation with members throughout Australia and overseas. The APS is the NSW state division of the Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants.

If you are interested in orchids, particularly native orchids, you should visit the home of the Australian Native Orchid Society which is a body dedicated to the cultivation, conservation and scientific study of native orchids in the Australasian region.

The Society publishes 'The Orchadian' - a respected orchard journal which promotes interest in the orchids of Australasia. There is also an extensive archive of information about all aspects of native Australasian orchid species. This information has been mainly sourced from the bulletins of the many ANOS groups and associated societies.

FloraBank aims to improve the availability and quality of native seed for revegetation and conservation purposes in Australia.

Funded by the Bushcare program of the Commonwealth's Natural Heritage Trust, FloraBank is a collaboration between Greening Australia, CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products through the Australian Tree Seed Centre, and the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The Australian Centre for Mining Environmental Research and the Nursery Industry Association of Australia also participate in FloraBank.

Australian Bushfood and Native Medicine is a site which seeks to promote the awareness and knowledge of Australian native plants as food and the uses of Australian plants for medicinal purposes - something that Australian aborigines had been doing long before any Europeans came to this land!

If you are looking to find information about something specific to Australia which isn't covered by anything at the ANBG or the ASGAP sites, try out the WebWombat, WildDog Search, or Google search engines.
