When I was looking at the various DCC systems which were available in
mid-2000, I tried to evaluate them using the traditional cost-vs-performance
method (ie. the 'bang-per-buck' method). This showed up something very interesting - that all of the commercial systems (from Lenz, Digitrax, Wangrow, Atlas, etc.) are basically offering the same level of cost-vs-performance, and for someone like myself who prefers to build things (otherwise I wouldn't have interests in both trains or computing and electronics), none of the commercially-available systems provided the challenge or the satisfaction of creating something which would form an integral part of my model railway's control system.
I'd been aware of the EasyDcc system from CVP Products during this process, but could not find anyone local who'd had any experience with it (at the time), even though I subsequently discovered there are many more EasyDCC devotees here in Australia that I realised! 8-)
Once CVP released the 4-digit addressing version of the firmware for their command station I was convinced that this was the right DCC hardware for me, so I purchased a complete kit of parts and now the system functions beyond my original expectations and makes operating trains much more enjoyable than it was with the old block-based straight-DCsystem.
