Welcome to

Zonavar's Hiteker (aka Apex) DVD Player Page

Compiled by Craig Dewick (aka Zonavar)

The Hiteker DVD players which have been sold here in Australia are actually the same as those bearing the Apex Digital brand name and sold in the US and Canada.

The units were manufactured by a Chinese company. The core of the players is an ATAPI-compatible CD transport with a seperate PCB containing the microprocessor-controlled video and audio decoding electronics. Another PCB handles the front panel controls and the display, with yet another board holding the video and audio output connectors and related passive components. The output board has provision for a TOS-link style optical audio output but this isn't fitted in the standard AD600A model which has been available here.

Key features of this model include:

  • - two pairs of line-level audio outputs,
  • - composite video, component video () and S-video outputs,
  • - the ability to disable region-locking, macrovision, etc. via a secret menu,
There are, perhaps not surprisingly, quite a few excellent web resources for the Hiteker/Apex DVD players! Check out these sites and see for yourself just how much opportunity exists for enhancing the features of your unit...

Apex Digital's website contains a host of information about their range of DVD players. What is doesn't contain is much in the way of grass-roots technical information and the sort of stuff which experimenters would be interested in.

That's what the next few sites are all about! ...

What I consider to be the best (IMHO!) and definitely the mostly widely talked about site for Apex DVD player experimentation, etc. is the Nerd-Out Apex Info Pages. This site is an excellent portal for people interested in modifications, etc. to their Hiteker/Apex units.

Another good one to visit is the more corporate-oriented Addis Enterprises Unofficial Apex Info Page. Addis are the company that's selling the Apex units in the USA and Canada. They are probably responsible for the huge proliferation of different models of DVD player that are emanating from the manufacturer in China, and are being sold in North America but apparently nowhere else.

Another excellent site for Apex DVD enthusiasts is Darren King's Apex/Hiteker DVD Hacking Pages. Darren's site has been drastically expanded and is currently hosted at the Nerd-Out Apex Info website.

For those who are curious, here's Darren's intro from his old site:

Welcome to my page dedicated to the Apex/Hiteker AD-600A DVD player. Here we will discuss some of the more technical aspects of the player. If you are interested in finding out more about your AD-600A, how to change the firmware, or even how to fix your power supply then you have come to the right place! Please note that this page is constantly under construction and some areas will change as more refinements are made.

So got and check out what he has to offer!

An excellent source of parts (and if you're in the same part of the world, servicing) for Apex DVD players is DVD Wizards, who offer a full money-back guarantee on all purchases.

If you know of any other comprehensive web resources covering the Hiteker/Apex DVD players (especially for any future models which are sold here in Australia), please let me know!
